At one point or another in the last 4 years, you would have heard many opinions and statements about Coconut Oil. Some saying its a superfood, others saying its bad for you. Coconut Oil has been a key ingredient in many Paleo, ‘Clean Eating’, and low carb diets often sparking controversy about its benefits.


Current literature highlight that Coconut Oil does not provide more benefit to other healthy fats such as Olive Oil or Canola Oil.


Coconut is 92% comprised of saturated Fatty Acids (SFA). It has been shown that SFA increased LDL cholesterol (the type that is associated with adverse health effects when in excess). Thus increasing the risk of coronary heart disease similar to other high SFA foods such as butter and fatty cuts of red meat.


Olive Oil is a great alternative as it provides polyunsaturated fats and nutrients. If you choose to consume Coconut Oil, keep it in moderation, like you would butter and animal fats. Good uses for this oil in in bliss balls as it remains solid in room temperature.

Overall, total diet quality is very important for good health and well-being. Aim to eat a variety of whole grains, lean protein, fruit and veg and monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat sources.
